unknown - Design for a Woven Textile - 1825–1850 - T-Shirt

A geometric textile design of orange eight-pointed stars, cobalt diamonds and striped squares, set on a warm brown ground.

Visual Elements & Composition

The design is built as a grid of square blocks. Large orange eight-pointed stars anchor the corners and the centre, each made from triangular and diamond facets. Between them, smaller squares split into blue and orange triangles, and several blocks carry hatched diagonal stripes. A dense border of small blue and orange diamonds frames the whole field. Ochre brown dominates the ground, with orange and cobalt doing the structural work.

Meaning & Symbolism

The stars act as anchors and the smaller blocks create a continuous rhythm between them, so each unit reads as part of one ordered surface. Star, triangle and diamond motifs were familiar in nineteenth-century textile design, where repeating layouts translated easily into woven cloth. The original sheet, catalogued as a design for a woven textile dating to 1825–1850, was drawn out at full scale as a guide for weavers and manufacturers. It reflects the period's preference for ordered, repeating patterns built from simple units.

Designed for the Tee

A tee shows its design across the chest, where the eye takes in the whole composition at once. The central star sits where the wearer's gaze lands, while the corner stars and diamond border frame it from the edges. The repeating blocks read as a single ordered surface, so the pattern holds its structure when worn.
