unknown - Design for an Embroidered Woven Fabric - 1825–1850 - T-Shirt

A fragment of a naturalistic floral design, painted in white, pale blue and pink on a deep brown ground, with a cluster of hanging blossoms falling across the centre and a larger bloom at lower right.

Visual Elements & Composition

Brown dominates the sheet and gives the flowers their contrast. Thin white stems rise from the upper left and curve into slender leaves, berry-like buds and small sprays of blossom. In the centre, pale blue flowers hang in looping, tassel-like clusters from a stem with long pale leaves. At lower right, a larger bloom in pink and cream sits among silvery blue-grey foliage, outlined with fine hatched lines. The edges are torn, and the paper shows through in several places, so the composition reads as an irregular piece rather than a complete repeat.

Meaning & Symbolism

The motifs are botanical rather than emblematic. The hanging clusters echo the wisteria and laburnum sprays that were popular in the period, and the stems that curve and branch show how a designer could fill a repeat with a flowing, continuous line. The visible outlines and layered colour preserve the working method behind the design. Dated to about 1825 to 1850, the piece comes from the decorative production of the early to mid nineteenth century, when patterns like this were used for dress fabrics and furnishing textiles. This reproduction draws on that original artwork, which was made as an embroidered woven fabric design.

Carried onto the Tee

A tee is worn close to the body and seen from every angle, so the fragment's scattered, asymmetrical layout suits it. The brown ground becomes the field of the shirt, and the blossoms and hanging clusters sit on the chest and move with the wearer. The torn edges and open areas of paper translate into breathing space around the flowers, letting the botanical forms read clearly at close range.
