unknown - Design for an Embroidered Woven Fabric - 1825–1840 - T-Shirt

This design is a repeating floral pattern of cream blossoms and lilac vines on a warm ochre ground, drawn as a working model for cloth made in the 1820s and 1830s.

Visual Elements & Composition

The warm ochre ground fills most of the field, with lilac scrolling vines curling across it in large looping arcs. Cream flower heads and pale leaves grow along the vines, and their interiors are hatched or netted, giving them a lace-like texture. Their centres are picked out in darker accents. Smaller paisley-shaped leaves with rust-coloured edges sit between the flowers. Handwritten marks and an inventory-style number cross the surface, and a catalogue number is printed in the lower corner.

Meaning & Symbolism

The sheet was made for repetition. Its looping vines and flower clusters were designed to join into a continuous field over long lengths of cloth. The naturalistic blossoms and sinuous scrolls reflect the floral taste of the period, when textile and wallpaper designers drew on garden flowers and climbing plants. Dated to about 1825 to 1840, the sheet comes from a time when French and European manufacturers produced large quantities of patterned fabric for dress and furnishing. It records the stage at which the repeat and colour scheme were fixed before production began.

Designed for the Body

On a tee, the repeat reads as a field of vines and blossoms that moves as you do. The looping scrolls stretch across the chest and sleeves, and the cream flowers stand out against the ochre ground in daylight. The pattern keeps the rhythm of the original cloth, so each wearer carries a piece of a fabric model that was meant to cover broad surfaces.
