unknown - Design for an Embroidered or Woven Fabric - 1815–1840 - T-Shirt

This is a painted floral textile design from 1815 to 1840, showing a dense field of naturalistic blooms, sprays of leaves and scrolled ornament on a deep rust-brown ground.

Visual Elements & Composition

Rust brown dominates the sheet, finely crazed with pale lines that give the ground a worn, antique texture. At upper left, a large layered bloom opens in lavender, white and grey, with a dark red and orange centre and serrated outer petals. Beside it, a blue-petalled daisy with a yellow centre rises on a slender stem, while a branch of green leaves carries small orange berries down the middle. Smaller blue flowers, a pink-tinged bud cluster and a secondary lavender bloom fill the gaps. Ochre scrolling tendrils curl around the right and lower corners, each enclosing a stylised palmette leaf, and together they frame the flowers into a clear, ordered whole.

Meaning & Symbolism

The sheet is a torn section of a repeating pattern, and its evenly spaced motifs were designed to cover the full surface of a length of cloth. The flowers are showy yet botanically observed, a combination typical of the taste of the early nineteenth century, when naturalistic blooms on grounds of deep colour were prized in European silks, furnishing fabrics and embroidered goods. The scroll borders bring a sense of architectural order to the lush planting, so the design reads as opulent and controlled at once.

Crafted for the Wearer

A pattern built to repeat across fabric suits a tee well, since the flowers and scrolls spread across the chest and sleeves rather than sitting in a single frame. The rust ground and jewel-toned blooms carry the richness of the original textile onto a garment you wear every day, and the scrolling border gives the front a structured edge that keeps the composition balanced.
