unknown - Design for a Woven Fabric, Fragment - 1815–1840 - T-Shirt

This is a tall, narrow fragment of a painted design for woven fabric, showing pendent cream catkins, lavender bell-shaped flowers and a fan-shaped form rising from a warm ochre ground.

Visual Elements & Composition

Ochre tan fills most of the field, with cream white, lavender, muted blue and near black carrying the drawing. A dark branch curves across the top edge, and from it hang rows of pale catkins tipped in yellow, built from small leaf shapes. Lower down, lavender bell flowers cluster along black stems, while a pale fan form edged in blue and yellow spreads beside a curling black scroll. The sprays seem to hang from an unseen support, which gives the whole sheet a light, drifting movement. Faint cracks and losses across the paper show its age.

Meaning & Symbolism

The pairing of drooping blossoms with a spreading, shell-like base reflects the naturalistic and ornamental vocabulary of the early nineteenth century, when designers joined observed plant forms with decorative scrolls to fill the ground of a woven pattern. The catalogue record dates the sheet between 1815 and 1840. As a partial painted design prepared for the textile trade, it shows only one section of a larger repeat, and it preserves the drawing and colour used to plan woven patterns in those decades.

Hanging Sprays on a Tee

The design is drawn as a vertical arrangement, so it reads best when the eye travels down the shirt from the branch at the shoulder line to the fan and scroll near the hem. The composition belongs to the chest of a tee, where the drooping catkins and bells hang in the same direction the wearer moves. Each spray stays a distinct element, so the fragment keeps its own identity on the garment.
