unknown - Design for a Woven Fabric, Fragment - 1815–1825 - T-Shirt

This fragment of a design for woven fabric, dated 1815 to 1825 in its catalogue record, presents a single flower spray: a large lilac-violet bloom painted on a rust-brown ground.

Visual Elements & Composition

The central bloom dominates the sheet, with pointed petals, a yellow-green centre and a white highlight. A smaller closed bud sits above it. Green serrated leaves spread out to the upper right, while clusters of pale blue forget-me-not-type flowers and small pink and blue buds fill the lower right. Cool lilac and blue set against the warm brown ground give the spray its presence. The edges are cut irregularly, and the original sheet shows cracks and abrasions across its surface.

Meaning & Symbolism

Early nineteenth-century textile designers used naturalistic sprays like this one to cover cloth with a sense of ease and variety. A dominant bloom surrounded by secondary flowers and foliage was built to be repeated across a woven ground. As a fragment, the sheet preserves one spray of a larger pattern and shows the floral drawing and colour that designers prepared for woven fabric between 1815 and 1825.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A spray designed to repeat across cloth works well on a tee, because the wearer moves through it. Seen from across a room, the lilac bloom reads first; up close, the blue buds and serrated leaves pick out the smaller details of the original drawing.
