unknown - Design for an Embroidered or Woven Fabric - 1825–1850 - T-Shirt

A painted tulip-like flower in yellow, orange and violet rises from a white lattice panel shaped like a scalloped leaf, set against a deep rust ground.

Visual Elements & Composition

Rust brown fills most of the sheet and gives the design its warm base. Dominating the upper section is a large cream panel, its surface worked in a fine lattice dotted with small points that read like openwork or net. Inside it, a layered bloom opens in yellow, orange and violet with a dark tip. A curving stem carries green and grey-green leaves with frilled edges, small pink and violet flowers, and a slender spray of clustered blue blossoms with white centres. Nodding red and yellow buds hang lower down. The stems travel from the panel to the edge, tying the separate motifs into one continuous pattern.

Meaning & Symbolism

This is a hand-painted botanical design from Europe, dated 1825 to 1850, when embroidered and woven goods often paired naturalistic blooms with lace-like grounds. The combination was meant to give a surface the look of richly finished textile, and the light, trailing stems express the period's taste for delicate, airy ornament. The original artwork is held in the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum collection, and this reproduction carries its floral and lace-inspired character forward.

Bringing the Pattern to Your Tee

The flower and lattice panel sit at the top of the composition, so the bloom reads first as you look down at the chest, while the trailing stems and blue and red buds wrap outward toward the edges. Wearing it, the design moves with you, with the painted spray running across the shirt rather than sitting in one fixed spot.
