unknown - Design for a casino - 1785 - T-Shirt

This is a late eighteenth-century architectural elevation of a casino building, drawn in pen and ink with a light colour wash and set out as a frontal, measured view of the facade.

Visual Elements & Composition

The facade is organised into five bays across two storeys. The upper level carries five tall rectangular windows set between pilasters, each framed by a moulded surround and fitted with a wrought-iron railing at the sill. A projecting cornice runs above, with a balustrade of panelled piers along the roofline. At the centre, a clock with a pale blue dial and gilt numerals sits within a curved, stepped pediment. The lower storey is treated as banded masonry, with five dark recessed openings beneath small fan-like brackets. Charcoal linework dominates, softened by grey wash and cream paper, with a pale pink accent.

Meaning & Symbolism

The contrast between the open, glazed upper floor and the heavier, striated base sets out a clear hierarchy between the public rooms and the entrance level. The clock at the apex marks the building's civic and social purpose, timing the gatherings held inside. The symmetry reflects the Neoclassical ideals of order and proportion that shaped public architecture of the period. The drawing belongs to the architectural presentation tradition of the late 1700s, when elevations were finished for patrons and for approval, and its neat linework, measured scale bar and framed border show the conventions of that practice.

Wearing the Design

An elevation is a flat, frontal view, and on a tee the building stands upright across the chest, so the five bays, the clock and the pediment read as one composed façade. The clock sits at the centre of the wearer's torso, where the eye lands first, and the banded base anchors the lower part of the shirt.
