unknown - Design for a salon wall - 1785-1795 - T-Shirt

This is a full wall elevation for a salon interior, drawn in pen and ink with grey wash and set within a thin red border.

Visual Elements & Composition

The layout is strictly symmetrical. Two paneled doors stand at either side, each with a tall upper panel and a shorter lower panel framed by narrow moulded edges. Above each door sits a semicircular lunette holding a low relief. A tall recessed panel rises between the doors, above a marble-style console table decorated with a central garland and a basket of flowers. The palette is restrained: pale grey and cream dominate, with mid-grey wash for shadow, charcoal line work, and a small accent of crimson in the border.

Meaning & Symbolism

The design reflects neoclassical taste in late eighteenth-century interiors, when decoration drew on the forms of antiquity. Putti among foliage and a reclining figure beside an upright object were common motifs for overdoors, signalling leisure, music, and the arts that a salon was meant to host. Egg-and-dart borders and repeated garlands carry the same classical vocabulary. The drawing was made as a working elevation, the kind architects and decorators used to plan how doors, reliefs, and furniture would read as one architectural surface. The original sheet, dating from about 1785 to 1795, is held in the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum collection.

On the Tee

A wall elevation is built to be read as a whole, and a tee suits that. The symmetry runs straight down the chest, with the doors and the console forming a single centred axis, so the image holds its shape from across a room as well as up close. The lunettes sit high on the shirt, where the eye lands first, and the garland and flower basket rest at the lower centre, where the composition settles.
