unknown - Design for a Fan Embroidery, Unfinished - ca. 1820 - T-Shirt

This is an unfinished fan-shaped embroidery design from about 1820, drawn in pale lines on a dark ground, with a fleur-de-lis lattice, crowns and scrolled foliage.

Visual Elements & Composition

Pale cream lines dominate a near-black brown field, with dark ochre and dull gold tones in the shading. The fan is divided by concentric arcs, and a scrolled border follows its outer edge. Inside, overlapping arches form a close lattice that holds small fleur-de-lis motifs. A vertical axis runs up the centre, marked by a crown at the top and another at the lower edge, with a pair of stylised flower and leaf sprigs on the right. Some areas are left unfilled, so the outline stage of the work is visible.

Meaning & Symbolism

The fleur-de-lis and crowns are emblems of royal authority in European heraldry and decorative art. Their repetition in a fan form points to an object made for courtly or formal use, since fans of this period were carried in polite society and their ground designs often carried motifs of rank and allegiance. The sheet records the moment the pattern was transferred for the embroiderer to follow, preserved from the working material of a European workshop in the early nineteenth century.

Carried Across the Chest

A fan is held and opened by hand, but this design is worn across the chest and seen from every angle as the wearer moves. The symmetrical arcs and central crown keep the composition balanced on the front of the shirt, so the geometry reads clearly at conversational distance.
