Visual Elements & Composition

Rust brown dominates the field, and the bright white, lilac and golden yellow blooms stand out sharply against it. A narrow yellow stripe runs along the left edge beside a column of small white flowers with yellow centres, alternating with grey-blue feathered sprigs. Green stems rise from the lower edge and arch across the sheet, carrying clusters of asters, pale star-shaped blossoms and nodding buds. The composition is weighted to the left and repeats in the upper and lower halves, so the sprays open into the inner area while the right side stays largely open.

Meaning & Symbolism

The border was painted in brush and gouache on glazed tracing paper between 1805 and 1820, a period when naturalistic flowers such as asters and star-shaped blossoms appeared often in European embroidered and decorative design. Borders like this trimmed embroidered pieces, with a column of flowers along one edge set against a plain field. Across the Front of the Tee

Because the border is a vertical strip, it suits a shirt's upright lines: the framing column of blooms runs with the body of the tee, and the sprays of asters rise toward the shoulders.
