unknown - Design for an Embroidered of Woven Horizontal Border - 1805–1815 - T-Shirt

A horizontal border of three upright white flower motifs rises from a golden yellow ground, joined by blue zigzag scrolls and finished with a white ribbon-and-rosette edge.

Visual Elements & Composition

Mustard yellow fills most of the sheet, with cream white and pale blue carrying the figures. Three large motifs stand across the centre, each a fan of tapering petals rising from a blue-tinted base over spreading stylised leaves. Smaller white and blue sprigs sit between them, and a pair of pale leaves frames each end. A band of blue zigzag scrolls runs beneath, and a white ribbon garland with rounded flower heads closes the bottom edge. The layout works as a repeat: the central motifs recur, separated by sprigs and tied together by one continuous scrolled base. The sheet's corners are slightly cut, and the numeral N° 708 appears in the upper left.

Meaning & Symbolism

The fan-shaped flowers and wave-like scrolls draw on the neoclassical and Empire vocabulary of the early nineteenth century, when symmetrical floral forms appeared on dress fabrics and furnishing textiles. Dated to about 1805 to 1815, this sheet is a design model for a border meant to be woven, printed, or embroidered along the edge of a length of cloth. The numbered annotation marks it as part of a working series of pattern samples, and the design captures the shift from late eighteenth-century taste toward the more formal order of the Empire style.

Made for the Tee Wearer

A border is a design meant to run along an edge, and this artwork suits the front of a tee for the same reason: the repeat reads across the chest and the scrolled base gives the composition a clear finishing line. The restricted yellow, white, and blue palette stays bold at a distance, so the motifs and their rhythm are visible as you move. Wearing it puts a working textile pattern from the early 1800s in an everyday setting.
