unknown - Design for an Embroidered or Woven Border - 1815–1840 - T-Shirt

A lush floral bouquet on a warm rust-brown ground, built around a large lavender iris and framed by a scalloped garland of pink buds and tied ribbon bows.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is set on a rust-brown ground finely crazed with pale cracks. The largest form is an iris opening at the upper right, its three broad petals shaded in lavender and blue with cream edges and dark feathered veining. Slender grey-green leaves fan up from a tuft at the lower left, while a cluster of small pink and white five-petalled flowers with dark centres sits at the upper left on thin wiry stems. Cream-outlined leaves and blue-and-ochre blossoms fill the gaps between the main forms. Along the base, a scalloped garland of small pink flowers and closed buds hangs between two bows, their long pale ribbon tails falling to the lower edge. The design reads as a complete ornamental unit, arranged to repeat along a border.

Meaning & Symbolism

The iris, the most prominent bloom, carries the central motif, while the garland and ribbons give the bouquet a framing, festive character. The work belongs to the painted floral tradition of early nineteenth-century European textile and decorative arts, when naturalistic flowers, ribbon ties and garlands were widely printed and woven on silks, muslins and furnishing fabrics. Dated 1815 to 1840, its loose, layered treatment of the flowers reflects the period's taste for lively botanical ornament.

Designed for the Tee

A repeating border motif suits the front of a tee, where the bouquet can sit as a single, self-contained unit across the chest. The iris stays at eye level when worn, and the garland and ribbon bows run along the lower edge of the shirt, so the framing of the original sheet carries over to the body of the garment.
