unknown - Design for a Woven Vertical Border - 1815–1840 - T-Shirt

A single flowering stem, rendered in gouache, rises through a warm rust ground in this design for a woven vertical border from 1815 to 1840.

Visual Elements & Composition

The panel is narrow and tall. A pale vertical band runs down the left edge beside a dark line, framing the field. The largest element is a violet, anemone-like bloom in the upper portion, with layered petals, a pale fringe, and a centre of red, green and dark tones. A smaller bud rises at the upper right on a slender stem. Lower down, grey-green leaves and two white, heart-shaped buds sit along the stem, and a dark curved line closes the lower edge. The cool violet of the bloom stands against the warm rust ground, so the flower is the first thing the eye finds.

Meaning & Symbolism

Flowers of this kind carried associations of beauty and seasonal renewal. The stem is shown as one complete unit, its head turned outward, so it reads as a single element within a longer vertical run. This follows the early nineteenth-century tradition of floral border design, where single-stem blossoms framed wider fields of pattern. The naturalistic flowers and simple, clear outlines reflect the taste of the period. The original design is catalogued in the collection of Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.

Wearing the Stem

A border is built to run in one direction, and a tee is worn the same way. Printed on the front, this stem extends along the length of the torso, so the bloom sits high on the chest and the leaves and buds trail down toward the hem. The vertical band and the dark lower line give the piece a clear top and bottom, which keeps the composition readable whenever the shirt is worn.
