unknown - Design for a Woven Vertical Border - 1815–1830 - T-Shirt

A narrow vertical panel of purple scrolls and pale yellow blossoms, set against a warm rust-brown ground.

Visual Elements & Composition

Rust brown fills most of the panel, so the cool violet scrolls stand out sharply. A pale lilac band and a thin black rule run down the left edge, framing the stem. Two large scrolls curl back on themselves, each enclosing a small flower with pale yellow and peach petals and a dark red centre. Small sage-green leaves sprout between the scrolls and at the top. Fine craquelure crosses the surface, and the design repeats one unit: a spiral scroll cradling a blossom.

Meaning & Symbolism

The spiral scroll and blossom carry associations of growth, renewal and ornamental abundance. Vertical borders like this framed wider fields of pattern, so the stem was drawn to read as one element in a longer run. The original is gouache on paper from the early nineteenth-century tradition of floral border design, when flowing scroll forms were widely used in textile and decorative schemes. Its catalogue dating places it between 1815 and 1830. The original is held in the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum collection.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A vertical border suits a tee, where the eye travels from shoulder to hem. The scrolls rise in a single stem, so the composition reads top to bottom as it was designed to. The lilac stripe and black rule give the edge a clean line, while the rust ground carries the flowers with the same warmth as the original panel.
