unknown - Design for a Woven Border - 1815–1840 - T-Shirt

A large lilac blossom rises over a rust-brown ground, with scrolling leaves, berry sprigs and a white drapery swag running along the base.

Visual Elements & Composition

Rust brown fills most of the sheet, giving the painting its warm, enveloping base. The dominant motif is a broad blossom at upper right, its lilac petals edged in white and its centre built from yellow, orange and red. Dark, feathery sprays with small blue berries hang beneath it, while a smaller group of green leaves and blue-violet berries curls toward an ochre and dark-green scroll. Along the bottom, a white swag with a netted panel and small plumed tassels forms a border that frames the whole arrangement. The flowers are simplified and opaque, painted flat in gouache.

Meaning & Symbolism

The design gathers naturalistic flowers, foliage and fringed drapery into one field, a combination widely used in decorative painting and printed furnishings in the early nineteenth century. The swag at the base suggests a panel hung on a wall, placing the bloom inside an architectural setting. Its warm ground and bold, simplified forms reflect the taste for floral ornament that flourished between about 1815 and 1840. The original working sheet is held in the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum collection, where it was catalogued as a design for a woven border.

On the Tee

A tee is worn close to the body, so the composition meets the eye at chest height rather than from across a room. The large blossom sits where the gaze lands first, with the sprigs and scrolls drawing the eye outward across the shirt. The drapery swag reads naturally along the lower edge, echoing the way the original was meant to frame a surface. Wearing it puts a two-hundred-year-old floral border on the move.
