unknown - Design for a Woven of Embroidered Horitontal Border - 1800–1815 - T-Shirt

A symmetrical horizontal border of fan-shaped palmettes, scrolls and leafy swags in cream and gold, set on a deep rust-brown ground.

Visual Elements & Composition

Rust brown fills most of the field, with pale gold, ochre orange and cream carrying the ornament. Fan-shaped palmettes of pale cream leaves rise at both ends, each supported by curling scrolls and a row of round dots. At the centre, a gold lozenge with a small horizontal bar and cream pointed elements is flanked by two arching scrolls and drooping leaf sprays in orange-gold. A narrow gold band along the lower edge closes the composition. The layout runs on a strict axis, so the eye reads the band as one continuous frieze.

Meaning & Symbolism

Palmettes and scrolls were a standard vocabulary of classically derived border ornament in the early nineteenth century. Their rising, fan-like forms express growth and ornamental order, while the balance of identical side units around a central motif reflects the period's preference for symmetry and carefully proportioned design. The catalogue places this original border design between 1800 and 1815. It was made to frame wider textile fields and decorative schemes, and the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum records it as a drawing of that tradition.

Wearing the Border Across the Chest

A horizontal border reads best when it runs across a wide, flat surface, and a tee gives it exactly that. The frieze sits across the chest as a single band, so the central gold motif lands at the midpoint of the view and the palmettes frame it on either side. Worn with the scrolls aligned to the shoulders, the design keeps the strict symmetry the original drawing was built around.
