unknown - Design for an Embroidered or Woven Border - 1780–1800 - T-Shirt

A tall vertical border of a single flowering stem, layered leaves and clusters of small blue blossoms, framed between two dark brown bands.

Visual Elements & Composition

The stem rises the full height of the sheet against a cream ground that fills nearly half the design. Its leaves are built up in sage green, golden yellow, crimson, ochre and deep brown, with a few pink-magenta blooms breaking out at the edges. Branching sprigs of five-petalled blue flowers with yellow centres fill the gaps between the leaves. Two dark brown bands, each edged with a thin blue rule, hold the stem in place and give the strip a finished frame. The sheet is marked N° 27 in the lower corner.

Meaning & Symbolism

The naturalistic botanical language here was fashionable in textile and wallpaper patterns of the late eighteenth century, when French and English designers favoured light, graceful florals over the heavier ornament of earlier decades. A rising stem stood for growth and continuity, and small blue blossoms suggested fidelity and remembrance. The numbered corner marks this as a working sheet from a pattern series, a study made for woven and embroidered borders that would trim garments, hangings and furnishings.

Wearing the Border Down the Body

A vertical border is built to run along a length, so this design suits the long axis of a tee, where the stem can climb from hem to shoulder. The brown framing bands read as the edges of a placed strip, which keeps the composition orderly even at a distance. Every element stays in its own column, so the eye follows the stem from the bottom edge to the top.
