unknown - Design for a Woven Border - 1790-1800 - T-Shirt

A small painted fragment in ochre and blue-grey, showing a row of arches framing a white shell-like fan, a red teardrop and a band of beads, dated 1790-1800.

Visual Elements & Composition

Ochre gold fills most of the ground, divided into arched fields and set against a cool periwinkle band. Each arch is edged with a thin white line, and inside the principal arch a white scalloped fan sits beneath an orange teardrop with a deep plum-red centre. A row of small red and white beads runs along the lower band, and a black angular scroll appears at the left edge beside short ochre stripes. The torn top edge and worn surface leave the fragment irregular in outline, and the flat shapes are simple enough to read clearly at a distance.

Meaning & Symbolism

The arch, shell and drop form a repeating system that was common in borders for textiles and interior furnishings of the late eighteenth century. The shell and bead band draw on the classical vocabulary of ornament of the period, reduced here to flat, simplified forms. This fragment is a study rather than a finished length of cloth: it shows a designer working out the colour relationships of a border before the pattern was woven or printed. Its restrained palette of ochre, blue-grey, white and red records that process.

Designed for the Shirt Front

A border was built to repeat along an edge, so the single arch with its enclosed fan is the unit that carries the pattern. On a tee, that unit sits on its own, large enough to read across the chest and clear enough to read from a few steps away. The arch shape follows the curve of the shoulders and the neckline, so the design holds its frame as the shirt moves.
