unknown - Design for an Embroidered Veritcal Border - 1780–1800 - T-Shirt

This is a tall, repeating botanical border of violets, pink and yellow blooms, and small blue flowers, painted in gouache on a cream ground.

Visual Elements & Composition

The cream ground fills most of the sheet. A dark navy stripe runs down the left edge, beside a band of small sage-green leaves dotted with red and white blossoms. Within the field, two bunches of flowers rise from bottom to top. Each is built from pale pink and green bracts, a cluster of blue and deep purple violets, and a spray of small yellow and pink daisy-like blooms at the crown. Smaller blue and mauve flowers fill the spaces between the groups. The same arrangement repeats down the length of the sheet, and the right side is left open.

Meaning & Symbolism

The violets and bell-shaped flowers draw on the posy and garland imagery of the late eighteenth century, when flowers carried sentiment as well as ornament. Dated to 1780–1800, the sheet reflects the period's taste for naturalistic flower painting applied to decorative borders and interior surfaces. Workshops producing embroidered and painted textiles used designs like this one, adapting close botanical observation to a regular, rhythmic pattern. The steady repetition is what made the border practical to transfer and reproduce.

Wearing the Border

A vertical border is built to run along an edge and repeat, and a tee gives it exactly that kind of path. The navy stripe and the stacked floral groups read as a column from hem to shoulder, so the design's tall, rhythmic structure stays intact on the body. Each bunch of violets and daisy-like blooms sits within a single vertical run, which keeps the composition as clear on the wearer as it is on the original sheet.
