This watercolour and ink study shows a shaped waistcoat panel scattered with naturalistic flowers, fern sprigs and a dotted brown border.

Visual Elements & Composition

Pale cream paper fills most of the sheet, with sage green fern-like stems forming the ground between blossoms in dusky purple, coral red, blue and rose. The panel is drawn as a flat pattern piece with a curved upper edge and a sloping outer edge, outlined in dark brown. A band of small dotted motifs follows the curve, and a single large red flower sits near the lower right. Some blossoms appear in profile, others in three-quarter view, and none repeat, so each motif reads as a separately placed element.

Meaning & Symbolism

Floral sprigs like these were the common vocabulary of silk and embroidered garments in the later eighteenth century, when botanical naturalism arranged flowers over fabric in loose, rising patterns. Waistcoats were the most visible part of a gentleman's dress, so their decoration signalled taste and fashion. Drawings like this served as working models for embroiderers and silk weavers, who transferred the motifs onto the cloth. The original sheet is dated 1780–1790 and is held in the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum collection.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A waistcoat panel was built to be seen across the chest, and this design carries that idea onto a tee. The blossoms and fern sprigs rise across the whole surface as one field rather than sitting in a single motif, so the composition reads as a complete scene at a glance. Wearing it puts a piece of eighteenth-century textile planning into everyday dress.
