This late eighteenth-century Neoclassical design shows a tall, narrow decorative panel built around a draped standing woman on a pedestal, framed by garlands, urns and scrolling foliage.

Visual Elements & Composition

A pale sage-blue border of trailing lattice and small rosettes encloses the whole scene. At the centre, a draped figure holds a garland on a pink-banded pedestal, with a scarf lifting from one arm. Flower-filled urns flank her, ribbon swags with blossoms hang across the top, and a bow-tied bouquet sits above. Below the pedestal, acanthus-like scrolls spread in symmetrical curves. The palette stays restrained: muted blues, dusty pinks, ochre and green on a warm cream ground, which takes up most of the sheet. Everything is mirrored around the vertical axis, so the eye settles on the figure first.

Meaning & Symbolism

Each motif comes from classical antiquity, which Neoclassical designers revived after archaeological discoveries in Greece and Rome. The draped figure, the garland and the swag, and the urn and the scroll all signal order, restraint and cultivated taste. Festoons and floral chains like these decorated walls, doors and furniture in elegant interiors, presenting the room as a place of refined leisure. This sheet served as a working model for a painted or carved decorative scheme, planned with the symmetry and proportion that defined the period. Wearing the Panel
