unknown - Design for a Panel - ca. 1780 v2 - T-Shirt

A pen-and-watercolour design for a tall decorative panel, centred on a winged Cupid inside a gilt-edged oval medallion.

Visual Elements & Composition

The panel is painted in muted tones of pale grey-cream, sky blue, rose pink, sage green and brown, and the cream ground fills most of the image. The layout is symmetrical and arched at the top. A looped blue ribbon sits above a suspended ring of tiny blossoms, and laurel fronds frame a shield-like urn. At the centre, the oval medallion shows the winged child with a staff in a leafy, watery landscape. Below it, a pitcher leans against crossed rods, garlands swag down each side, and a basket of blossoms on a small foot closes the composition.

Meaning & Symbolism

The winged child is Cupid, god of desire, and his placement at the heart of the panel makes love the theme of the whole scheme. The crossed rods, ribbons and laurel recall the shepherd's crook and the poet's crown, joining rural simplicity to learning and song. The basket and garlands speak of plenty and the garden, so the design presents a gentle, idealised country life. It draws on the pastoral and amorous repertoire that decorators favoured in the later eighteenth century. The original was a working model for a painted panel set into boiserie or a wall scheme, produced by decorative painters in France and elsewhere in Europe around 1780. The original drawing is held in the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum collection.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A tee carries its artwork across the chest, so the medallion becomes the focal point when the shirt is worn and seen at a distance. The slim vertical format of the panel suits the torso, with the garlands and basket following the lines of the body. Up close, the fine pen work and watercolour washes of the original show their detail, and the quiet palette keeps the look calm in everyday wear.
