unknown - Design for a sedan chair - ca. 1780 - T-Shirt

A pale side elevation of an enclosed sedan chair, drawn in pen and light watercolour around 1780, reduced to its outline, a green drape, and a carrying pole.

Visual Elements & Composition

Parchment tones fill most of the sheet, so the chair reads as a clean, open silhouette. The tall body tapers toward a small foot and tops out in a curved roof with finials at each corner. Its edges and panel divisions are traced in rows of tiny dots, giving the outline a beaded finish. On the right, a window framed in gold ochre holds a green drape with tassels, the strongest colour in the drawing. A long horizontal pole runs beneath the body, and a scrolling bead line with a small pendant decorates the upper left panel.

Meaning & Symbolism

A sedan chair was a closed seat carried on poles by two bearers, and in eighteenth-century towns it was a familiar sight on the street. The beaded trim and green drape signal refinement and privacy, the sense of a passenger who valued both comfort and finish. The drawing reflects the neoclassical preference for clear outline and measured ornament that shaped carriage design across late eighteenth-century Europe. Sheets like this were made to show a proposed chair's proportions and finish to a client or workshop, recording how a practical conveyance could be made orderly and elegant. The original is held in the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum collection.

Drawn for the Chest

The chair is a single object seen in profile, so the design works as one centred image rather than a pattern. Across the chest, the bead-edged body runs straight down the torso, and the carrying pole sits low like a hem line. The restrained palette lets the outline read clearly from a distance, while the fine dotted edges reward a closer look when the shirt is worn.
