unknown - Trophy - ca. 1780 - T-Shirt

A small watercolour trophy gathers a gold lyre, an oval mirror, a blue ribbon and a flower bouquet into one ornamental group, with a garland of pink and blue blooms sweeping beneath them.

Visual Elements & Composition

The pale cream ground fills most of the sheet, leaving the wash open around each motif. The lyre lies on a diagonal, its gold edge picked out and its strings drawn in fine grey pen lines. An oval mirror with pale blue glass and a gold frame rests against it, and a royal blue ribbon knots the two together. Red and grey-green blooms rise above the lyre in a loose bouquet, while rose pink roses and blue flowers, with green leaves, form a garland across the lower part of the sheet that ends in a gold scroll.

Meaning & Symbolism

Trophies of this kind collected the attributes of music, the toilette and polite society into one group, presenting them as emblems of a refined household. The lyre stands for music and the mirror for the toilette, while the flowers and the transience of beauty give the arrangement its grace. The ribbon-bound garland reads as a festive device. The sheet is dated around 1780, when trophies like this were popular in French and German decorative drawing and in painted interior ornament. Its light, economical handling suggests a study made for transfer to a larger surface, one of the many small designs created to decorate rooms of the period.

Designed for the Chest

This is a single, centred arrangement, so it lands squarely where the eye settles when someone is facing you. The garland's sweep runs along the lower edge, where the design flows with the shirt's natural hang. Each motif is clear at conversation distance, and the open ground around the lyre, mirror and bouquet keeps the group from crowding the shirt.
