unknown - Design for Waistcoast - ca. 1780 - T-Shirt

This is a late eighteenth-century watercolour design for a waistcoat, showing a shaped panel edged with sprays of pink, violet and green blossoms.

Visual Elements & Composition

The pale grey paper dominates the sheet, with a shaped panel outlined in violet and a curved upper edge. Flowers and leaves run along the lower border and up the left side. A violet bloom and pink bud sit at upper left, a rounded pink and violet rose anchors the lower centre, and a blue-violet flower closes the right. Green, brown and red leaves gather in clusters beneath a row of small violet rosettes. The top section carries a faint, unpainted floral pattern in grey outline. Small catalogue numerals, 24 and P.906, appear on the sheet.

Meaning & Symbolism

Floral ornament was a mark of fashion for men in the later eighteenth century. Silk waistcoats of the period were often embroidered or painted with bouquets, and this drawing shows how flowers were meant to rise from the hem and spread across the front of the garment. The naturalistic, slightly asymmetrical arrangement reflects the taste for garden flowers in the decorative arts of the time. The sheet is a working design, made so a workshop could lay out the decoration before embroidery or weaving began, and it belongs to the body of 1780s pattern drawings for the clothing trade.

Wearing the Pattern Forward

The waistcoat panel was drawn to sit on the front of the body, with its blossoms climbing from the lower edge toward the chest. On a tee, that same front-facing field carries the bouquet across the torso, where the sprays and rosettes read as they were intended to read on the original garment: as a single arrangement seen from across the room.
