unknown - Design for a salon entrance wall - 1825 - T-Shirt

A symmetrical salon wall in sage green, cream and gold, with a gilded mirror rising above a marble chimneypiece at its centre.

Visual Elements & Composition

Sage green dominates the wall, with cream architectural members and pale grey marble filling the lower zone. Fluted Corinthian pilasters stand at each corner and frame the central bay, where a tall rectangular mirror in a gilded frame sits over the chimneypiece, with garlands of foliage falling down either side. Two pairs of raised-panel doors balance the composition at each end, beneath relief panels of figures and garlands, while a frieze of small figures and scrolls runs under the deep cornice. Nothing competes with the mirror. Every other element arranges itself around it.

Meaning & Symbolism

The columns, garlands and relief panels draw on the Neoclassical vocabulary of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, when ancient Roman and Greek forms were applied to interior decoration. Gilt frames and marble surfaces signalled the status of a room and the taste of its owner. The original watercolour and pen elevation is dated 1825 and belongs to the tradition of presentation drawings, in which a designer showed a patron the finished appearance of a room before work began. It is a plan for a room as much as a picture of one.

Designed for the Tee

An elevation is drawn straight on, with every element set square to the viewer. That suits a chest print, where the design is seen head-on and at a distance, and its central axis sits naturally on the centre line of the shirt. The mirror becomes the focal point of the front, with the columns and doors framing it on either side, just as they do on the wall the artist drew.
