unknown - Design for a Salon Wall - ca. 1760 - T-Shirt

This pen and grey wash elevation shows a Rococo panelled wall, built around two arched niches flanking a draped central alcove with a sofa.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is almost entirely parchment cream, with charcoal and mid grey wash carrying the linework and shading. The wall is symmetrical: two arched niches with shell-like heads stand on either side, each holding a lobed, carved jardiniere on a plinth. Above them, asymmetrical scrolled cartouches frame blank panels, and narrow vertical panels with carved finials run along the outer edges. At the centre, a scalloped canopy opens onto the alcove, with a drape hanging to one side and a tasselled cord beside it. A carved-frame sofa sits inside on a low stand. A scale bar marked in toises runs along the base, with the numerals 3 and 4 toises visible, and a faint pale pink stain adds a small note of warmth.

Meaning & Symbolism

The Rococo style gave architectural panelling movement through curving rocaille, shells and scrolled cartouches, and this wall shows that approach in full. The central alcove, with its drapery and sofa, makes a more intimate space within the room, a retreat for conversation or rest. The paired niches balance the scheme, so the wall reads as one setting in which furnishings and decorative frame were planned together. The toise scale bar points to a French source, since the unit was used there before the metric system. Designs of this kind were produced in the 1750s and 1760s by architects and decorators serving aristocratic patrons, and this sheet was drawn as a working elevation recording the dimensions and carved detail craftsmen needed to build the scheme.

On the T-Shirt

An elevation is a flat, frontal view, and on a tee it reads best from a standing distance, as a whole wall with its niches and central alcove visible at once. The symmetry of the composition centres on the chest, so the alcove and sofa sit where the eye lands first, and the carved ornament spreads outward toward the sleeves and shoulders.
