This is an all-over pattern of interlaced strapwork and scrolling foliage, prepared as a design for a woven textile between 1820 and 1860.

Visual Elements & Composition

Ochre brown fills most of the field, with orange and a small amount of dark brown carrying the line work. Broad strapwork bands loop and cross over one another to form a lattice of pointed arches and lozenge-shaped compartments. Inside each compartment, fine scrolls, curling tendrils, small leaves and pointed foliate sprigs appear in a lighter orange-yellow line. A narrow border of ornament frames the edges. No single motif takes over, so the eye moves from one knot to the next. The catalogue number 1909-13-105 is the only lettering on the sheet.

Meaning & Symbolism

Geometric strapwork paired with vegetal scrolls was a long-established ornamental language. It drew on medieval and Islamic-derived decorative systems that circulated widely through European pattern books and were applied across the decorative arts. The contrast between rigid geometry and organic curl gives the design its rhythm and order. Its mid-nineteenth-century date reflects the period's taste for richly patterned, historicising ornament, and designs like this were prepared for weaving and reproduced across textiles and printed matter.
