unknown - Design for a Wrought Iron Balcony - ca. 1750 v1 - T-Shirt

This is a pen-and-ink elevation of a nine-bay wrought iron balcony railing, drawn as a long horizontal panel with a measured scale beneath it.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is rendered in sepia ink black on cream paper, with a pale tan wash at the edges. A flat top rail runs the full width above nine vertical bays, each marked by a number along the graduated scale. The outer bays hold narrow, symmetrical scrolls and leaf-like sprigs. The centre rises into a pair of large mirrored C-scrolls and a shell-like form, with small rosettes at the joins. Rows of dots mark the rivets along the frame, and the Roman-style annotation echelle neuf pieds de longueur states the scale: nine feet of length.

Meaning & Symbolism

The composition balances on a central axis, so the eye travels from the richly developed middle toward the plainer end bays. Curled ironwork of this kind expressed the lightness and movement prized in the rococo taste, with scrolls that seem to grow and unfurl from one another. The drawing belongs to the mid-eighteenth-century European tradition of decorative ironwork design, when balcony and stair railings were among the most visible uses of the style. Its catalogue date of around 1750 places it firmly in that period. Designs like this were drawn so a smith could forge each section to measure, and the scale line makes the intended length of the run explicit. The original is held in the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum collection.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A balcony railing is a long, level run, and this design reads best across a wide flat surface. On a tee, the nine-bay sequence spreads across the chest with the central C-scrolls sitting at the middle of the shirt, where the eye lands first. The balanced symmetry holds when the shirt is viewed from across a room or up close in hand, so the scrolls and scale line stay legible at either distance.
