This tee carries a tall, arched mirror frame drawn in brown ink and warm wash, with a carved Rococo crest rising above an open central field.

Visual Elements & Composition

The palette is restrained: dark brown ink for the outlines, a warm sepia wash for the moulding, and pale parchment that fills most of the sheet. The frame is narrow and vertical, with a beaded inner edge that follows the arch at the top. A scrolled crest with C-scrolls fills the upper section, and foliage garlands fall on either side of a seated figure. Shells and small scrolls sit at the base of the crest, and the lower corners turn into curling feet. The centre stays unpainted, so the eye lands on the frame's outline rather than on any image.

Meaning & Symbolism

The Rococo frame joins architectural structure with asymmetric curves and figurative motifs. The seated figure, holding an open book or tablet, adds a note of learning and refinement. Mirrors of this kind hung above consoles or between windows in principal rooms, where they reflected light and extended the space, so the frame served as both ornament and a way of opening the wall. The drawing comes from the mid-eighteenth century, when designers supplied detailed frame drawings to patrons and craftsmen. The original sheet is held in the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum collection.
