unknown - Design for a mirror frame - 1750 v2 - T-Shirt

This is a tall, arched mirror frame drawn in pen, brown ink and warm watercolour, with a seated figure enthroned beneath a scrolled crest.

Visual Elements & Composition

Pale parchment fills most of the sheet, with sepia wash warming the moulded border and dark brown ink setting the outlines. A beaded inner edge follows the curve of the head, and an entablature carries a crest of C-scrolls. Swags of foliage spread to either side, and curling scroll feet close the lower corners. A small shell sits at the base of the arch. The centre is left open and unpainted, so the eye settles on the figure above it and the empty field below.

Meaning & Symbolism

The seated figure holds an open book or tablet among laurel branches, imagery tied to learning, music and poetry, the pursuits valued in the cultivated interiors of the period. The Rococo vocabulary of asymmetric scrolls and figurative crests marks the drawing as mid-eighteenth-century decorative art. Designers produced sheets like this as presentation drawings for patrons and for the craftsmen who built the work. Frames of this form held mirrors and overmantel panels, where the glass caught candlelight and made a room feel larger. The original drawing is held in the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum collection.

Wearing the Heavy Cotton Tee

A tall, symmetrical frame suits a shirt front, where the arch rises across the chest and the scrolls sit on the shoulders. The open central field becomes the broad blank area the design depends on, so the figure and crest stay legible at a glance across the room.
