This pen and watercolour drawing presents an upright mirror frame built from urns, swags and laurel, with a pale tan glass panel set at its centre.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is dominated by pale cream paper, with pale gold moulding that traces the frame's edges in a narrow band of beads and reels. A stepped crest rises from a shelf of scrolling foliage, and at its centre stands a vase-shaped urn holding a cluster of purple and pink flowers. Laurel sprigs curve upward on either side, while pink blossoms hang down the outer edges. The composition is symmetrical and balanced, with a small numbered label, "No 2. I.B.", at the upper left.

Meaning & Symbolism

Mirrors were central to the decoration of a late eighteenth-century room, where they caught light and seemed to extend the interior. The urn, swag and laurel belong to the neoclassical vocabulary that recalled classical antiquity and valued order and restraint. The softer pink flowers and drapery temper those architectural forms, so the design reads as elegant rather than severe. Drawings like this were prepared for cabinetmakers, gilders and carvers, who turned the design into a finished frame. The original is dated 1775 and is held in the Cooper Hewitt collection at the Smithsonian.
