unknown - Design for a sedan chair - 1770-1775 - T-Shirt

This pen and watercolour design shows an enclosed sedan chair, a covered seat carried between two long poles, drawn with a richly ornamented body and a pale wash of colour.

Visual Elements & Composition

Dark grey linework does most of the work, tracing the chair's shallow curved roof, its scalloped band, and the small finials that crown it. Pale parchment fills the sheet and dominates the layout, with soft grey-green and a faint terracotta wash beneath the chair. Tassels hang from the corners in a touch of violet. The carrying poles cross the sheet diagonally, giving the composition movement, while the lower body narrows to a curved base and a glazed panel shows on the right side.

Meaning & Symbolism

Each side of the chair carries swags, a central oval medallion topped by a crest, and floral sprays drawn in fine line. These motifs belong to the neoclassical vocabulary of the late eighteenth century, which borrowed from classical relief and furniture decoration. In eighteenth-century Europe the sedan chair was a common way to move through crowded cities without walking, and ornament like this signalled a wealthy owner's rank and taste. The drawing dates to about 1770 to 1775, when that style was spreading through the decorative arts across Europe. Sheets like this one presented a proposed form to a patron or guided the craftsmen who would build and paint the finished chair.

Wearing the Sedan Chair

A sedan chair is a structure seen from the outside, and this tee gives its front-facing ornament a full canvas across the chest. The medallions, swags and tasselled corners sit where the eye lands, so the pattern reads as a small architectural object worn in the open.
