unknown - Design for a Chimneypiece with Alternative Suggestions - 1770–1775 - T-Shirt

This is a loose pen-and-ink study of a fireplace, with two standing figures holding up the mantel and a row of ornament above them.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sketch is built from brown ink, brown wash and touches of red chalk on pale paper. The firebox is a dark mass of wash that anchors the centre, while the lower middle is loosely hatched. A draped female figure stands on the left with her arms folded, and a male figure on the right leans against the edge of the opening, a staff crossing his body diagonally. A broad frieze runs across the top, dotted with small relief figures, scrolls and swags. Above the left figure sits an urn on a pedestal, with two branched candle-holders rising from it. In the upper right, faint red chalk outlines a second figure, a visible alternative placed beside the first scheme.

Meaning & Symbolism

The two figures act as caryatid and atlas supports, carrying the weight of the chimneypiece on their shoulders and bodies. Their mirrored placement shows the artist testing how the supports and the frieze would balance. The urn with branched lights reflects eighteenth-century domestic taste, when candles and sculpture were combined on the mantel. The title records alternative suggestions, so the sheet offered more than one scheme for the same fireplace. It is one of the quick preparatory drawings made for interior decoration in the early 1770s, when designers worked through several options on a single sheet before settling a final elevation. The original drawing is in the Cooper Hewitt collection.

Made for Wearing Every Day

A fireplace sketch rewards a close look, and a tee keeps the drawing at chest height where its figures, urn and frieze can be read in turn. The composition's balance of two supports on either side suits a shirt's centred front, and the alternative figure in the corner gives the eye a second thing to find. Wearing the design means carrying a neoclassical study of interior ornament into daily life, with its lively, exploratory line intact.
