unknown - Design for a Chimneypiece, with an Elaborate Overmantel - 1725–1750 - T-Shirt

This pen and wash drawing sets out a Rococo chimneypiece, with a large scrolling overmantel rising above the hearth to a vase-shaped urn.

Visual Elements & Composition

Pen and brown ink with grey-blue and yellow wash fills the sheet. A large asymmetrical cartouche of C- and S-curves, shell-like rocaille forms and leafy sprays dominates the centre, rising from a moulded base and crowned by an urn with a flame or foliage finial. Diagonal hatching shades a pilaster on the left, and a plain grey-washed block sits beside the ornament above the hearth opening. Faint ruled guidelines and small pencil marks cross the paper, and a separate scrolled motif closes the lower edge.

Meaning & Symbolism

The drawing places the overmantel at the visual centre of the room, the spot where a mirror, painting or clock would ordinarily hang. Its rising scrolls and vegetal forms reflect the rocaille style that spread through French and German-speaking courts in the first half of the eighteenth century, when asymmetry and organic curves began to replace the stricter symmetry of earlier decoration. Designs like this guided craftsmen, showing how carved wood or stucco would be shaped and where gilding or colour would go. The yellow wash suggests a gilded or painted panel, a common finish for interior woodwork of the period. The original sheet belongs to the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum collection.

Wearing the Overmantel

Worn on the body, the cartouche lands at the centre of the chest, the same place the eye settles on the drawing. Its scrolls spread outward toward the shoulders and sleeves, so the ornament reads as a focal point from across a room. The printed design carries the full rhythm of the original sheet, from the urn at the top to the scrolled motif at the hem.
