unknown - Drawing - 1725–1750 - T-Shirt

This is an eighteenth-century pen and grey wash design for a pedimented altar niche, with a chalice raised at its centre beneath a sunburst of rays.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is built in charcoal ink and pale grey wash on cream paper, with the paper itself filling most of the frame. A triangular pediment with a central shell crowns a round-headed recess flanked by pilasters and tall outer columns. Inside the recess, a chalice on a tiered stem rises from a bank of clouds, and straight and wavy rays fan out behind it. Above the cup sits a roundel bearing the monogram IHS with a cross. Two cherubs cling to the pilasters, and a garland of leaves hangs beneath the pediment. The lower margin carries a handwritten inscription naming the commission.

Meaning & Symbolism

The chalice, the sunburst and the IHS monogram all point to the Mass and to Christ's presence in the consecrated host. The niche is the setting where such a vessel would be kept and displayed. The cherubs and clouds bring a note of heavenly grace, and the shell at the apex is a familiar Baroque emblem of sanctity and baptism. The inscription ties the sheet to a church in Rome, so the drawing presents itself as a design for worship rather than an abstract exercise. It belongs to a body of eighteenth-century Roman designs for church furnishings, a city where tabernacles, altars and chapels were commissioned on a large scale.

On the Tee

A tall, centred niche suits the front of a shirt. The chalice and rays sit at chest height and read clearly from across a room, while the cherubs and garland frame the edges. The sheet's open paper and fine line work translate into a print that keeps the architecture crisp and the monogram legible.
