unknown - Design for a Chimneypiece, with Alternative Suggestions for the Overmantel Frame - 1650–1700 - T-Shirt

This is a frontal elevation of a scrolled overmantel frame rising above a blue-washed chimneypiece, drawn in brown ink and pale wash on cream paper.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is built on a strict central axis. A moulded frame encloses an arched opening, and its head resolves into a pair of symmetrical scrolls topped by a central acanthus-like finial. Leaf and scroll ornament fills the upper corners, while bold C-scrolls run down the sides. Small rosettes and bands of beading decorate the arch. Below, a pale slate-blue mantel sits on a stepped plinth, with a plain rectangular firebox at the base. Parchment cream dominates the sheet, with ochre and sepia accents in the carving.

Meaning & Symbolism

The overmantel was the area above the fireplace where a mirror, painting or carved panel was set, and this frame exists to make that space the focal point of the room. Its scrolled ornament and shaped pediment belong to the decorative language of the mid-to-late seventeenth century, when carved and gilt frames grew more elaborate and linked the hearth to the wall above. The blue wash on the stonework shows the designer contrasting plain masonry with richly carved wood. The sheet is one of a pair of alternative schemes, a common practice in which designers offered patrons several options. The original is held in the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum collection.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A frame drawn as a single centred elevation suits a torso, where the eye lands first on the middle and then travels outward along the scrolls. The ornament reads from the neckline down, so the composition is seen whole when the wearer faces someone across a room.
