Visual Elements & Composition

The cream ground fills most of the sheet, and the motif runs from base to top within a narrow, upright rectangle. The central bloom is pale pink with deep rose at its heart, its petals curling outward. Smaller pink buds and green buds rise above it and branch to either side, joined by spiky seed heads and serrated sage-green leaves in two tones. The stem is brown and thin, and it ends in a woody branch with small twigs at the lower right. Careful shading on each bud gives the sprig its sense of graduated growth.

Meaning & Symbolism

The rose was among the most popular motifs of the late eighteenth century, appearing in textiles, porcelain and painted decoration. This sheet, dated between about 1770 and 1800, belongs to the late Rococo and early neoclassical years, when workshops relied on botanical sample drawings as models. The naturalistic handling reflects the period's interest in accurate observation of plants as a source of ornament. A self-contained sprig like this was drawn so it could be transferred to a garment, a fan or a small panel, and the original sheet is held in the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum collection.
