unknown - Detailed View of the Three Figures - ca. 1818 - T-Shirt

A pencil and wash study of a funerary monument, with two standing figures rising above a tomb and a reclining figure resting at its base.

Visual Elements & Composition

Parchment cream fills most of the sheet, with sepia grey and pale grey lines building the forms. A faint architectural frame of arches, pilasters and a vaulted recess surrounds the scene. At the centre, a rectangular tomb block carries a raised lid. The figure at left wears a loose draped cloak, while the figure at right, in an ornamented garment, rests a hand on the lid. On the front of the block lie a helmet, a sceptre-like staff and a sword. At lower right, a reclining nude leans against the base, and drapery spills across the plinth at lower left. The shading is soft and modelled, with no lettering on the sheet.

Meaning & Symbolism

The tomb is the point of commemoration. The two standing figures look out over the lid, presenting a memorial in which those who survive honour the dead. The helmet, staff and sword place the deceased within public duty and command, while the reclining figure expresses grief or repose, a motif common in funerary art of the period. The drawing comes from the early nineteenth century, when designers worked out the full elevation of a monument and then studied its figures in close detail. The original sheet is held in the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum collection.

Designed for the Chest

On a tee, the central tomb and its two standing figures sit across the wearer's torso, with the architectural frame extending outward toward the sleeves and hem. The fine pencil lines and soft grey wash read most clearly at close range, the same distance at which the original drawing was studied. Worn, the monument stays upright and composed, as it was drawn to be.
