unknown - Standing figure of the Archangel Gabriel - ca. 1700 - T-Shirt

A graphite drawing of a winged youth, identified as the Archangel Gabriel, stands full-length on pale paper, his head lifted toward something above him.

Visual Elements & Composition

The figure fills the sheet from head to sandaled feet, set against a field of pale paper that dominates the image. Graphite grey carries the drawing, with darker accents deepening the folds of the robe and the heavy drapery pooling at his feet. A long diagonal staff cuts across the body and anchors his weight, while one arm reaches outward with an open hand. Large feathered wings rise behind him, and faint grid lines run across the sheet, visible beneath the figure.

Meaning & Symbolism

In Christian tradition, Gabriel is the angel who carries God's word, most famously the Annunciation to Mary in the Gospel of Luke. The upturned gaze and open gesture express attentiveness and readiness to receive a message from above. The wings mark him as a celestial being, and the staff suggests the authority of a herald or envoy. This is a figure study from around 1700, the kind of drawing used to work out pose, drapery and proportion before a figure was transferred to a larger altarpiece, fresco or painting. The grid across the sheet shows that transfer process, and the sculptural handling of cloth places the work within late Baroque figure drawing.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

On a tee, the figure is seen up close and at eye level, with the wings and staff reading clearly across the chest. The pale paper tone and graphite lines give the design a quiet, drawn quality that suits a shirt worn every day.
