unknown - Drawing - ca. 1800 v1 - T-Shirt

This is a pen, ink and wash title page in which a map's name sits inside a monumental classical architectural frame, with an eagle and putti rising above it.

Visual Elements & Composition

Two pairs of fluted Corinthian columns stand on a plinth and carry a richly carved entablature with a relief frieze. Above the cornice, grey wash clouds hold a spread-winged eagle flanked by flying putti, and urns sit on small pedestals at either end of the top edge. Rose-tinted panels between the columns frame standing figures in niches, and a lower panel holds a relief scene. At the centre, a white tablet carries the lettering: Carta della Grecia, naming the Greek lands and European Turkey, bounded by the Black Sea, the Adriatic, the Archipelago and the Danube, and dated Napoli 1809. The palette stays close to cream paper, sepia wash and ink brown, with faded brick pink and grey cloud tones.

Meaning & Symbolism

The composition follows the conventions of neoclassical cartography, where a map's title was set within a monumental architectural frame. The eagle and putti are a standard sign of authority and divine favour, and the columns and relief panels recall ancient monuments, linking the modern map to the classical world it describes. The lettering attributes the work to Giovanni Antonio Rizzi Zannoni (1736–1814), an Italian cartographer and engineer identified in the inscription as director of the Topographic Office of War. Its borders defined by seas and a river, the region is presented as an ordered and monumental subject.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

The frame is built as one contained panel, so the whole scene reads as a single image rather than scattered details. Columns, entablature and clouds stack vertically, which suits a shirt worn at the chest, where the eagle sits high and the lettered tablet falls at the centre. Wearing it puts a 1809 title page on your own body, with the architecture doing the framing work.
