This is a pen and wash study of a classical title cartouche, drawn to frame the heading of a printed map of Greece.

Visual Elements & Composition

Pale paper dominates the sheet, with soft cool grey wash shaping the clouds and shadowed architecture. Four fluted columns with Corinthian capitals rise on either side of a central tablet, carrying a banded entablature. Above it, an eagle with outstretched wings sits among clouds, flanked by two winged infants. Rose-tinted niches hold oval reliefs and draped standing figures, and the tablet itself is lettered in slate ink: CARTA DELLA GRECIA, followed by the lines naming the lands on either side of the Ionian Sea, European Turkey, and the closing NAPOLI 1809.

Meaning & Symbolism

The eagle and putti in clouds were emblems of sovereignty and celestial approval, so they crown the frame as a mark of the authority behind the publication. The columns and relief bands draw on antiquity, presenting a modern survey of the Greek lands in the visual language of classical monuments. The design was made by Rizzi Zannoni, a cavaliere and director of the Topographic Office of War, and the tablet organises the region by its seas and rivers, as contemporary mapmakers did.

Wearing the Monument

A title cartouche is built to be read from a short distance, and this one places its columns and tablet across the front of the wearer's chest, so the architecture stays intact at a glance. The grey clouds and rose niches sit around the central lettering, giving the shirt a stable, orderly centre. Wherever you wear it, the frame of a nineteenth-century map title keeps the same formal balance.
