unknown - Oil lamp - 1810–25 - T-Shirt

This design shows a Neoclassical standing lamp, drawn in pen and brown wash on grey-blue paper, with a covered urn crowning a tall, carefully proportioned stem.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is built on a strong vertical axis. A covered urn with handles sits at the top above a small dish, and two side arms extend from the stem, each ending in a lamp cup with a wisp of smoke or flame. Below, figures hold up the arms and branch-like stem, with clusters of grapes hanging among them. The base is a tall plinth with a moulded cap, a central rosette, garland swags, ribbon-tied drapery and a small shell-like motif near the foot. Sepia wash models the forms against the pale grey-blue ground, and the cream highlights give the lamp its sculptural presence. Catalogue numbers are inscribed on the sheet.

Meaning & Symbolism

The supporting figures carry the lamp upward, a motif drawn from classical furniture and lighting design. Figures bearing a load recalled ancient sculpture, and the Greek and Roman sources admired in this period shaped their use. The grapes, the garland and the urn draw on the festive imagery of the classical world, linking domestic light with abundance and celebration. The drawing is a design for an object rather than a scene. It was produced for cabinetmakers, metalworkers and bronze founders who supplied lighting to the richly furnished interiors of the early nineteenth century, when Empire and Restoration styles drew heavily on antique forms. The sheet presents a finished elevation so a craftsman could follow its proportions.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A lamp rising from a plinth is a strongly vertical image, and on a tee it runs down the centre of the chest, with the urn and lamp cups at the upper body and the figures and plinth below. The fine linework and wash tones read well at close range, so the viewer sees the garlands, grapes and rosette as the drawing's craftsmanship intends, one detail at a time.
