Visual Elements & Composition

The figure is Saint Felix of Cantalice, a sixteenth-century Capuchin lay brother who spent much of his life in Rome. He was known for his humility and for walking the streets to beg alms for the poor, and he was canonised in the seventeenth century. The bowed head, folded hands and plain habit express that humility, while the halo and clouds set him apart as a saint rather than an ordinary friar. The drawing turns a life of quiet service into an image of devotion. Its sheet is dated 1780–1810 and names no maker, and it belongs to a long tradition of Capuchin and Franciscan devotional images, made small enough to be kept close and contemplated privately.
