unknown - One of a set of four projects for the decoration of wall panels to be placed at - 1675-1699 - T-Shirt

A symmetrical semicircular ornament in brown ink and wash, built around a round medallion flanked by two winged figures.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is drawn in dark brown ink over a cream ground, with sepia wash giving the forms their shading. Its two halves mirror each other along a central vertical fold, so the arched outline and the medallion sit exactly on the axis. The medallion has a beaded and egg-patterned rim and a plain, open centre. At upper left, a winged figure sits on a stepped plinth holding a leafy stem; at upper right, a second winged figure perches on a curled acanthus scroll. Acanthus leaves and volutes spread across the lower band, and a floral swag hangs from a fluted base on the left.

Meaning & Symbolism

The winged figures act as guardians of the centre. The figure on the plinth lifts the composition upward, while the figure on the scroll balances it on the opposite side. Mirrored symmetry of this kind expresses order and dignity, the qualities expected of a formal interior. The drawing belongs to the late seventeenth-century vocabulary of ornament, in which acanthus, scroll and winged figures were combined into schemes for walls, ceilings and doorways. Sheets like this were prepared as clear layouts for stuccoists, carvers and painters to follow, and the period range of 1675-1699 in its record places it firmly in that tradition. The empty medallion was left as a field for a painted subject, an emblem or a monogram.

Designed for Close Viewing

A tee is worn at chest height and seen from every angle, so the arched layout works as a centred focal point rather than a backdrop. The mirrored halves read cleanly across the front, and the medallion sits at the wearer's centre line. The balance of the composition suits a garment that is meant to hold its shape on the body.
