unknown - One of a set of twelve projects for the decoration of wall panels, to be placed - 1675-1699 - T-Shirt

A vertical wall-panel design in brown ink and wash, built around a standing putto, a flower-filled vessel and a large open oval frame.

Visual Elements & Composition

The design is drawn in sepia brown on a cream ground, with pale tan shading that gives the figure its body. A ruled border holds the whole panel in place. At the left, a large oval with a rope-moulded rim is cropped by the edge of the sheet, its centre left blank. Beside it, a small putto stands in a shallow recess, one arm resting on a scrolled support and the other holding a basket or horn heaped with flowers. A small shell-shaped cartouche sits above the recess, while acanthus sprays and a curled volute rest on a moulded base below. A band of small repeating ornament runs along the foot of the panel.

Meaning & Symbolism

The standing putto with its flower-filled vessel expresses abundance and the fruitfulness of a well-ordered house, a theme common in decorative schemes of the period. The open oval leaves a field for a painted subject, a portrait or an inscription, and its cropping shows that it continued into a wider decorative run. The recess and volute frame the figure like a niche, giving the panel the character of a sculptural relief. The record places the sheet within a set of twelve projects for the decoration of wall panels, dated 1675-1699. Panels like this were designed as repeating modules, each pairing a figure, a cartouche and acanthus work so that a wall could be assembled bay by bay.

On the T-Shirt

Printed on a tee, the panel reads as a single vertical unit, with the putto and its flower-filled vessel sitting at chest height and the oval running toward the side seam. The crisp contour lines and controlled hatching hold their detail at close range, so the ornament reads as drawn work when worn and viewed up close.
