unknown - Project for scrollwork escutcheons - 1640-1670 - T-Shirt

This brown ink and wash study shows a sheet of scrollwork escutcheons and cartouches, drawn as ornamental frames for craftsmen to copy and adapt.

Visual Elements & Composition

Brown ink and brown wash on pale cream paper give the sheet a warm, single-tone palette. Two oval cartouches sit at the upper left, each holding a small standing figure inside a rim of garland that falls in swags. A tall scrolled bracket rises at the upper right. Below, broader asymmetrical shield and tablet forms carry a fruit cluster, a grotesque mask, and a spiralled volute with a cherub head set between its scrolls. A shallow dish and a small footed element fill the centre.

Meaning & Symbolism

The garlands and fruit express abundance, while the masks and cherubs carry decorative and apotropaic associations. The figures inside the oval fields point toward allegory. The sheet treats each cartouche as an adaptable unit: a central field for an image or inscription, framed by scrolls, shells and natural motifs that can be reproduced and combined. Drawings like this served as pattern material for carvers, metalworkers and plasterers, who transferred such designs onto furniture, mirrors, picture frames and architectural fittings. This sheet dates from 1640 to 1670.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

Designed as a sheet to be worked from, this artwork is built around a single central field. On a tee, that field becomes the focal point at the chest, with its garlands and scrolls spreading outward toward the sleeves. The classic, relaxed fit lets the drawing sit openly across the front, so the framing reads as one complete composition rather than a detail.
