unknown - Three friezes for an overdoor - 1795 - T-Shirt

This is a pen and grey-wash design for an overdoor, showing two putti holding a garland above a doorcase crowned by a reclining lion and a plumed urn.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is monochrome, built from ink grey and charcoal line over warm paper cream. A narrow horizontal panel runs across the top, with a seated putto at each end holding one side of a swag of flowers and fruit tied with ribbons. Below, the doorcase is drawn in elevation: a moulded cornice with a carved band, the lion stretched along its top, and a tall urn with a plumed finial set beside it. Scrolled brackets and carved panels line the jambs, and a recessed panel sits in the upper frame. The eye moves down from the lively garland to the heavier architecture beneath.

Meaning & Symbolism

The putti and garland signal celebration and abundance, themes central to the festive decoration of the period. The reclining lion, a long-standing emblem of vigilance and strength, guards the threshold, while the urn and its plume add dignity. Together these motifs frame the doorway as a place of honour and welcome. The drawing comes from the late eighteenth century, when doorways and chimneypieces were treated as showpieces of the house, and it served as a working design for craftsmen setting out proportion and ornament for carved and plastered work. The original sheet is held by the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.

Designed for the Wearer

A tee puts the composition on the chest, where it is seen at conversation distance and moves with the body. The garland sits across the upper panel and the doorcase falls below it, so the layers of the design read from the shoulders downward, the same way the original drawing guides the eye. The lion and urn remain the focal points at the centre of the shirt, where the stacked architecture of the original takes shape in wearable form.
