unknown - The left half of a frieze - 1825–50 - T-Shirt

This is a long horizontal frieze of ochre wash and brown ink, built around a winged griffin, acanthus scrolls and a central rosette.

Visual Elements & Composition

Ochre yellow dominates the panel, with sepia brown line work and cream paper showing through at the edges. The composition runs left to right within a thin ruled border. The left side is filled by a large spiral of acanthus leaves, with a rosette of overlapping petals at its centre and a second tendril carrying small blossoms and leaf sprays. At the right, a griffin stands in profile with its head raised and a forepaw lifted, its wing feathers drawn in fine strokes. A pilaster with leaf ornament closes the far edge. Graded washes model the leaves so they read as carved relief.

Meaning & Symbolism

The griffin, with the body of a lion and the wings and head of an eagle, served as a guardian in ancient and medieval art and later appeared in classical revival decoration as a sign of vigilance and protection. The acanthus has long stood for growth and renewal in classical ornament. Set together, the two motifs pair watchfulness with abundance. The sheet dates from 1825 to 1850, when classical and Renaissance ornament was widely revived in European interiors, and it was prepared as a working study of pattern for craftsmen such as plasterers, carvers and painters.

Wearing the Frieze Across the Chest

A frieze is built to run horizontally across a wall, and on this tee it runs across the chest, so the griffin and scrolls read as one continuous band as you move. The ornament is placed where the eye lands first, which suits a shirt that is seen from close range in everyday wear. The design carries its own history on the front of the garment, so the tee doubles as a small piece of 19th-century decorative drawing.
